Custom Brutalist Walnut Hotel Lounge Chair with Black Velvet Upholstery
Broad walnut arms, a low architectural profile and deep black velvet cushions give this lounge armchair a strong, sculptural presence — developed to order for luxury hotel lobbies, executive lounges and guest suites.
The woodwork makes the first impression. Broad, squared-off walnut armrests frame a generously upholstered seat, while the chair's low base and substantial back panel give the silhouette the presence of a small architectural object. Rather than relying on decorative trim or slender legs, the design takes its character from bold rectangular forms, sharp transitions and the natural movement of the walnut grain. The side and rear views reveal an especially interesting construction: the cushions are recessed within the timber surround, and the lower structure has a stepped, open profile that visually separates the upper frame from its base. This layered arrangement gives the chair an almost floating appearance despite its substantial proportions. Deep black velvet upholstery provides a softer counterpoint to the wood, with a thick seat cushion and a generously sized back pillow making the otherwise rigid silhouette feel inviting. PALMWELL develops project-specific versions for hospitality interiors, coordinating wood finishes, upholstery and manufacturing details with the wider furniture and FF&E package.
Product Views
The chair shown from the front, rear and in two architectural interiors, so the walnut frame, the recessed velvet cushions and the stepped base can be read as one composition.

Key Highlights
Broad Squared Walnut Arms
The arms are wide, flat-topped blocks rather than rails, so the chair reads as a volume. Their width and height set the proportion of the whole piece and can be reviewed against the project drawings.
Stepped, Open Lower Frame
The upper body overhangs a separate plinth with an open shadow gap between them. That one detail is what gives a heavy chair its floating quality, and it depends on precise joinery rather than surface decoration.
Cushions Set Within the Frame
Seat and back cushions are recessed inside the timber surround instead of sitting on top of it, so the wood holds the soft elements in place and the clean outer outline is preserved.
Two Materials, No Trim
Dark walnut and black velvet-textured upholstery form the entire palette. With no piping, studding or metal accents, the visual interest comes from grain, shadow gaps and the contrast in surface texture.
Where the Shape Comes From
Four views that explain the design logic: the frame carries the cushions, the base is separated from the body, and the grain does the decorative work.

Materials & Craftsmanship
- Walnut frame
- Dark walnut with a visible, naturally varied grain across the arms, back panel and base. Whether the structure uses solid timber, veneered panels or a combination is determined through engineering review, since each approach changes weight, stability and cost. Tone, grain direction and sheen are approved against project material references.
- Black velvet-textured upholstery
- A deep black fabric with a short pile that absorbs light and softens the geometry of the frame. Fibre composition, pile, abrasion performance and cleaning requirements are confirmed per project, together with any fire performance standard required for the destination market.
- Seat and back cushioning
- A thick seat cushion plus one large loose back pillow, both sized to sit inside the timber surround. Foam density, seat firmness, pillow fill and seam placement are reviewed during sample development.
- Frame-to-upholstery junction
- The cushions are recessed within the woodwork, so the tolerances between fabric and timber edge are a visible part of the design. These gaps and clearances are set on approved drawings and checked on the production sample.

Customization Options (OEM / ODM)
Dimensions and Proportions
Arm width, seat depth, back angle and the height of the lower frame all change how the chair reads in a room. A pair beside a low coffee table in a lobby needs different proportions from a single reading chair in a suite, and these are reviewed against the floor plan and approved drawings.
Walnut Tone and Frame Finish
A warm, natural interior may call for a lighter walnut finish; another property may want a deeper smoked appearance that relates to wall panelling, reception furniture or guestroom casegoods. Oak or ash can also be reviewed where they suit the design and manufacturing requirements.
Upholstery and Comfort
The pictured version uses black velvet-textured fabric, but a project may specify another colour, texture or approved upholstery. Cushion proportions, seat firmness, stitching and the desired comfort level are discussed together with cleaning, abrasion and fire requirements.
Coordinated FF&E Packages
The walnut finish selected for this chair may also need to relate to reception desks, coffee tables, console tables, lounge sofas and guestroom casegoods, so material references and finish schedules are coordinated across the whole project.
Quality & Service
Engineering Review
Wide timber surfaces need an appropriate structural solution, and the transitions between arms, back and base must preserve the intended proportions. PALMWELL reviews these points before manufacturing drawings are finalised.
Sample and Prototype Approval
Sample development can confirm walnut finish, cushion fit, back support, overall proportions and the visual relationship between the wooden and upholstered components before production begins.
In-Process QC and Inspection
Once design and materials are approved they become the reference for production and quality inspection, so a chair that looks right as a single sample retains its appearance across multiple rooms and floors.
Two Manufacturing Bases
Manufacturing operations in China and Vietnam across 500,000 sq. ft. of production space, backed by 30 years of combined experience, with packing protection and shipment coordination for project procurement teams.
FAQ
Is this a sofa or a lounge chair?
It is a single lounge armchair. It has the thick cushioning and low, relaxed sitting position of a sofa, but the frame is built for one person, so it is specified as a lounge chair or armchair rather than a multi-seat sofa.
Can PALMWELL customize the dimensions and the walnut finish?
Yes. Project-specific dimensions, walnut tones, grain direction and frame details can be reviewed against your drawings and material requirements. Final construction and finishing details are confirmed through engineering review and sample approval.
Can we specify our hotel's own upholstery fabric?
PALMWELL can review client-nominated fabrics, colours and upholstery references. Material suitability, commercial performance requirements and availability are confirmed for the intended application before production, including any fire or abrasion standard that applies in the destination market.
Can this chair be supplied within a complete hotel FF&E package?
Yes. PALMWELL supports custom furniture manufacturing for guestrooms, suites, lobbies, lounges and restaurants, and can coordinate material references, finishes, engineering, sampling, manufacturing and delivery requirements within a broader FF&E package.
